This bird never fails to surprise me. The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL returned to my feeders in Silver Spring, MD this morning after a 3-4 week absence. I first saw the bird on December 2, 2007 and he has been off & on since then. I thought for sure that after he stopped visiting in late February that he had flown north but apparently not. He still looks quite healthy.
In the last 2 weeks, I have also had 2 different Fox sparrows visit (one had a white cap). Also Eastern phoebe and golden-crowned kinglet.
If you visit the site, please do not park on Sligo Creek Pkwy. The feeders are visible from Sligo Creek Pkwy <1/4 mi. west of Colesville Rd. He either visits the thistle sock or the window feeder on the top floor of the house.

"There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot...like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher 'standard of living' is worth its cost in things natural, wild, and free. For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable as free speech."
