I wrote the entire DC section in Claudia Wilds' "Finding Birds in the
National Capital Area." The areas described as the best for shorebirds are
still the "best", although certainly Hains Point has deteriorated somewhat.
It probably now requires a hurricane to "restore" it. The hydrilla between
National Airport and Alexandria is where it all happens. Over the years we
have had all the shorebirds on the DC list there except Woodcock, Piping
Plover, Knot, and Buff-breasted. The hydrilla does require patience for the
right tide and viewing conditions, and a good scope. It peaks in September.
