Steve and others....
We went to Michigan on Memorial Day weekend and found
the Kirtland's Warbler before we took any tours... thanks to
the folks in the U.S. Forest Service office in Mio. They told
us exactly where to go. Unfortunately, I cannot find the map
that we used to pinpoint the spot.
It is OK to drive the roads to look and listen for the Kirtland's.
It is unlawful to walk into the Jack Pines to go searching for
them.... but, you don't really need to. With some patience,
they will eventually pop up and pose for you. We heard six
and observed two during our weekend stay. Plus, the Clay-
colored Sparrows were singing and posing in the same area.
I suggest that you e-mail the Mio office and ask them if they
will give you the "suggested" roads to cruise. Their e-mail
address is: mknorr/r9_huronmanistee@fs.fed.us
according to one of the notes that I have. Their phone number
is: (517) 826-3252 Also, see the webpage mentioned below.
The US Fish & Wildlife Service also offers tours "daily". You
can check out all of the details for the tours by going to this
webpage: www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/hmdoc6b.htm
Phone number: (517) 351-2555
e-mail: r3elfo@mail.fws.gov
Good luck. We had a great time and hope you do too!
