Lydia and MDOspreyers,

I'm sorry I may have been misleading in my original reply to Lydia's
request on Bachman's Sparrows. I do not have experience with these
birds in the winter. Thanks to Ken and Noel for your experienced
comments on lack of song and only sporadic call notes in the winter for
this bird. Noteworthy too is their lack of response to tapes...

I checked last year's Christmas Bird Count and the nation's top count
for Bachman's Sparrow comes from Avon Park, FL with only 21 birds. They
put in a total of 80 party hours and traveled nearly 400 miles by
car/foot/boat. Another way to look at this would be about 4 hrs of
birding and 20 miles by car/foot/boat for 1 Bachman's Sparrow. In other
words, pretty tough going. In the spring, they have a unique and
beautiful song and vocalize often. Without this, though, they would be
very tough indeed to see.
