The Buffies that frequent Frederick County, MD usually found in the = following two habitats: 1. Fields of short grass with some sort of water association (i.e., a = small stream or trickle or puddles) 2. Drying manure lagoons where most of the water is gone and lots of = "dry" cracked surface is exposed. These habitats are found particularly at the Harney road "ponds" and = fields in the Lewistown area. There were two buffies among 25+ Am = golden plovers at the east manure lagoon on Harney road on Saturday. No = buffies have been found in the short grass fields this year. There also = seems to be an association between the presence of Am. golden plovers = and Buff-breasted sands in our area. I will also add a cautionary note here. NEVER walk near the edge of the = manure lagoons at Harney road. It is VERY deceptive. It may look dry = and firm but the difference of an inch or two can mean the difference = between standing on terra firma and being up to your neck in manure. = Believe me, "been there done that." Please stay back from the edge or = these "ponds." Good Birding!
