Today, on my lunchtime walk at Northampton Lake, I came across the biggest
Waxwing flock I've ever seen. Before I even got out of the car, I spied 25,
and then a little later, 50, but those two groups paled in comparison to
the 500 that came pouring over the south treeline, like water rushing over
a jetty. They were difficult to count for sure, but I was able to quickly
tally a conservative 500, counting by 25s, while the flock briefly swirled
above the lake before reversing direction and landing on the trees which
they had just flown over. The collective hum of the flock was quite loud,
if not a little painful to hear.
Also notable during my walk were two Prothonotary Warblers, my first for
the location in well over 100 checklists. They were possibly migrants, as
this small suburban lake is not exactly good breeding habitat for this
species.
