The highlight of my visit to Point Lookout this morning was seeing 519
Horned Grebes. I had expected to see a lot, given the recent movements,
but this certainly exceeded my expectations. I counted 49 on the
Potomac, and approximately 470 along the eastern edge of the causeway.
They ranged from absurdly close to absurdly far (I basically couldn't
see the end of them on the bay side). Most were either in, transitioning
to, breeding plumage.
Some other notables were Royal Terns at Point Lookout and on the
Patuxent in Benedict, Charles Co. Also in Charles County was a single
Vesper Sparrow at Indian Creek WMA, along with seven Savannah Sparrows.
