Evening,
On the way home from his grandparents, Declan fell asleep in the car.
That afforded my daughter Isla and I a quiet moment of car birding at
Sandy Point SP.
Highlights:
-The Northern Gannet show is in full swing. There were no less than 21
birds (conservative count) stacked up against the bridge, mostly on
the AA side (feeding relatively close).
-Two Peregrine Falcons were flying over the top of the tower on the
West-bound span. One perched, and the other flew directly West over
50, heading likely to catch a migrant blackbird sp. somewhere over my
home.
-One lone Tree Swallow and one Northern Rough-winged Swallow passed
overhead heading North.
I heard a news report that scaffolding is soon to go up all over the
bridge in preparation for some major work on the West-bound span.
Luckily, the falcons scrape in on the East-bound span, so the only
interference should be limited to 'frustrating a birder trying to
commute over the bridge to chase a rarity'.
Back at home, I visited the main pier to quickly add Northern Gannett
to my community list. A hundred or so Scaup lingered at the mouth of
Whitehall Creek. A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was quite vocal, as were
two Hermit Thrush (singing a lot today, in both the morning and late
afternoon) and a Pileated Woodpecker (who I suspect is nesting
nearby). Lastly, there was an interesting Junco at our feeder
tonight, likely just a very pale individual, but it caught my
attention. I dusted off the flash and tried to remember how to
photograph birds using flash... and then it got dark. ; )
Good Birding,
