I was delighted to see a Phoebe checking out the flat part of our gutter
drainpipe as a possible nesting site a few minutes ago. This is my FOS
Phoebe, and a very welcome returnee. It also perched in the witch hazel for
a few minutes, pumping its tail vigorously. That witch hazel, by the way,
just began dropping its flowers on the 13th. It had been in continuous bloom
from January 13 until then-two full months! In a more typical year, it
begins to bloom sometime between Groundhog Day and Valentine's Day, and the
flowers would last until the beginning of April.
