Very interesting! A similar story with a different species: A few years ago I was amazed to see a Barred Owl catching VERY large earthworms in a swamp forest in King William Co VA.  It perched above the wet forest floor scanning the ground. Then flew down grabbed a worm and flew back to its perch. The worm hung from its beak almost down to its toes. Then it took off with the worm in the direction of the sound of a screeching fledgling. It did this twice as I watched over a period of about 10-15 minutes.

Have some second hand photos of a Red-shouldered Hawk eating worms on
Jazzerberry Farm. If anyone wants to  see them, let me know.  Never seen or heard
of this behavior.
