I spent the weekend with family in Ocean City and on my way home this
(Tuesday, 7/5) morning I spent about an hour birding Skimmer Island
(9:10-10:05). It was overcast and the tide was coming in, which made
for very nice viewing conditions of an ever narrowing strip of sand and
a reduced number of birds. But it was still great to catch up with some
year birds and lots of species that don't make it to DC. I also had the
pleasure of meeting and birding with Warren Strobel. Many of the same
birds reported the previous week by others continued - we found:
c.79 Brown Pelicans
1 Great Cormorant
1 Cattle Egret (along with all of the other expected egrets and herons,
except the Yellow-crowned NH)
c.46 Willets, of which one looked like a good "Western"
c.5 Short-billed Dowitchers (Hendersoni)
1 gimpy Dunlin
1 Spotted Sandpiper
3 peep, sp.
2 Sandwich Terns
c.29 Black Skimmers
The only bird that I don't recall being reported earlier was a beautiful
adult Black Tern that stuck around on the flats for c.5 minutes.
Good birding,
