Hi all,
I car-birded for part of the day on the Eastern Shore Monday 4 July, here
are some highlights- I started at Ocean City where most of the previously
reported birds were still hanging out, I then worked south, two adult LEAST
SANDPIPERs were in the marsh at Bayside Development. Truitt's Landing had
good numbers of expected waders highlighted by an adult WHITE-FACED IBIS,
even through the heat shimmer and distance, the pink facial skin was easily
seen with a scope, there weren't many shorebirds (6 LESSER YELLOWLEGs, 5
GREATER YELLOWLEGs, 2 adult *hendersoni *SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERs, and many
KILLDEER) yet but there is a lot of exposed mud so it should be good. At
the end of the road, there were 2 SALTMARSH SPARROWS running along the
roadside. North Vaughn had good numbers of expected waders as well,
highlights from here being a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and calling LEAST BITTERN.
On the way home, I looked for field birds through Somerset and Wicomico, I
did not find any Dickcissells but there seems to be plenty of nice habitat.
I located a single VESPER SPARROW on a wire at the intersection of 313 and
Nanticoke Road. A quick check at Hurlock WWTP was highlighted by the
already building fall swallow flock, there were hundreds of BANK and TREE
SWALLOWs, a few BARN SWALLOWs, a few NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWs, and 2
CLIFF SWALLOWs.
Good Birding!
