Information that birders in Maryland should know...

Should you find yourself looking through your scope (or bins) at
vacationers, dogs, boaters, etc (anyone who does not look authorized)
on Skimmer Island this summer, here are some numbers to keep stored in
your phone:

The Natural Resources Police HOTLINE: 800-628-9944
or
Catch-a-Poacher: 800-635-6142.

Skimmer Island is closed to all entry except DNR and USDA employees
and a few select others that are doing census work. All of these
individuals contact the NRP before going on Skimmer Island so that NRP
knows when they are there. Most are usually in marked DNR boats.

According to David Brinker, "There should not be anyone on Skimmer
Island more than once a week or so, and then only for very short
periods of time. None of these folks will have a dog!"

So if you should find yourself watching Maryland's nesting Black
Skimmers, Royal and Common Terns (to name just a few species) being
disturbed by people and their dogs, please call the NRP HOTLINE.

NOTE: There is a core 'signed area' that is closed. However, people
on the mudflats outside of the signed area are OK.

Good Birding,

Dan
