Hi all,
Joy and Mike Bowen, Brad Bukema, Brent and Mary Byers, Kathy Calvert, Sandy
Farkas, Diane Ford, Joe Hanfman, Kurt Schwarz, Susan Volman, Dave Webb, Leo
Weigant, and I had an excellent time birding most of Garrett County on
Saturday 21 May 2011. The best part of the day was excellent migrant and
resident bird diversity. Finzel swamp held exciting birds including OLIVE
-SIDED FLYCATCHER (found by Tom Feild and Bill Hubick shortly before our
arrival) that was singing almost the entire time of our visit, WILSON'S
WARBLER, RUFFED GROUSE, SORA, and VIRGINIA RAIL. We continued on stopping
at Piney Reservoir where we had our only BANK SWALLOW of the day, Little
Meadows Lake and Campground held two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERs, we continued
on to Pea Ridge Road where we had HENSLOW'S SPARROWs, SAVANNAH SPARROWs,
BOBOLINKs, and a VESPER SPARROW that sang 3 times. At Russell Road, we
found another VESPER SPARROW, and Kathy Calvert found her closeout NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRDs. Along Savage River Road we located a couple of LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSHes, many NORTHERN PARULAs, CANADA WARBLERs , and a ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK nest. Frank Brenneman Road was quiet, but we were able to locate
most of the regularly occuring birds as they foraged in the canopy because
the trees were down-slope of us most were at or below eye level. We were
able to watch a pair of CERULEAN WARBLERs as they foraged. We continued on
Through Snaggy Mountain Road where we located a pair of DARK-EYED JUNCOs, a
singing BROWN CREEPER, and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. A quick stop at Broadford
Lake yielded two alternate plumaged HORNED GREBEs, another RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, two RUDDY DUCKs, and a COMMON LOON. We ended in the Pleasant
Valley with PURPLE MARTINs, and RED-HEADED WOODPECKERs being our last new
species of the day. Our final tally was 116 species, it was an excellent
day to be out and about with everyone!!
