I had a productive morning at the Blue Mash Nature Trail in Montgomery County this fine Monday morning with a nice round 50 species. Highlights were first-of-year Yellow Warblers and Eastern Kingbirds (no eBird reports yet for Mont. Co. on these two), a singing House Wren, a Common Yellowthroat doing its song, Green Herons, a Gray Catbird, a small group of Purple Finches, and yellow Palm Warblers. Field Sparrows were singing all over as were Eastern Towhees. The Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds are actively competing for the houses. Raptors were well represented with Broad-winged, Red-shouldered, and Red-tailed Hawks as well as American Kestrel. Brown Thrashers and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were plentiful. Little variety in water birds on the two ponds (C. Goose, Mallards, and Dbl-cr. Cormorants), but the land birding was great.

While I have not put it on my list, I think I may have heard a Ring-necked Pheasant. There are two reports from this area of Montgomery County in 2007 and 2008 in eBird. I don’t have much experience with the Pheasant’s sounds. I listed to calls online when I got home.

My complete report from eBird follows.
