Check out David LaPuma's website www.woodcreeper.com to follow spring migrants as they return. Fascinating!
Each night during spring and fall millions of birds actively decide whether to initiate migration, a decision which is in part determined by weather conditions. Modern RADAR technology can detect bird migration in real-time and freely available RADAR output on the internet allows birders to visualize migration and determine where, when and how many birds are moving during the night.
David will present an overview of the relationships between migration and weather phenomena, as well as how to interpret RADAR data to understand migration activity. This demonstration will provide you with the tools to predict the birding conditions in your neck of the woods, or anywhere else you might be interested in. Come see this presentation at Irvine Nature Center's Birding Seminar, "Feathers in Flight" on Saturday, April 9th 2011, and spend the rest of the season tracking nocturnal migration across your region, state, county, and your favorite patch.
