A Red-necked Grebe was still to be seen in the Potomac off Riley's
Lock today, March 4, just after noon. It is still in basic plumage
but with touches of red coming in at the foreneck. There were also
3-4 Horned Grebes in the vicinity. Nice comparisons of bill size and
neck length.
The Greater White-fronted Goose was found at around 2 p.m. today in
the smaller of the two ponds at L. M. Stevens Park in
Poolesville. It was swimming with about two dozen Canada Geese. The
bill is orange, but I didn't see the legs, so don't know what color
they are. In the larger pond at the park there were a Pied-billed
Grebe, 3 drake American Wigeon and a drake Gadwall in with Mallards.
I don't know how many birders live in or near Poolesville, but I
think these ponds -- particularly the larger one -- may prove quite
productive as waterfowl move North and drop in for an hour or a
day. I have visited only a few times in the past year, but there
often seems to be something of interest on the water. (And there was
a female Kestrel flying around today, too.)
