Got to the Choptank late morning yesterday and spent about an hour scoping
the ducks. The usual Canvas backs, Scaup and the like. 2-3 Long-tailed
ducks way out, as well as some Surf Scoters; had about 25 Goldeneye from
Oakley St., and another 25 from the park on Somerset. Most were pretty far
out, but a few were close enough for good views (both males and females).
Not much on Egypt Rd.to Blackwater. At the refuge a couple of thousand
Snow Geese in the big pool in the meadow, and 3-6 Tundra Swans. Many Bald
Eagles everywhere. They were sitting on the ice, in the trees, and flying
around. We counted about 25 on just one drive through. On the road out to
Rt.16, had two Woodcock right by the side of the road.
Found the White Pelican on the ice to the left of the causeway on Key
Wallace. On Maple Dam/Shorter's Wharf Road, had 18 Bald Eagles (on ice, in
trees, and flying) at one stop; not much else out and back. Nothing on
Bespitch Rd.or on the Elliott Island road. Nice to see so many eagles; about
50 for the day.
