Updated on Rescheduled Ocean City Christmas Bird Count:
Because of the Nor'easter that came up the coast last Sunday, the Ocean City area was hit with snow in excess of a foot. Drifts up to 2 feet were common. The OC Christmas Bird Count was originally set for Dec. 28. When it became apparent that side roads would be barely passable and parking for birders very limited under such conditions, the count for last Tuesday was canceled.
After surveying all recent participants in this count, they selected Tuesday, January 4, as the date with the most available birders. This number is still substantially lower than the usual manpower for this count. Consequently, we have plenty of room and a high demand for additional birders to help on this count. If you are interested in helping on this count, please contact the compiler, Jay Sheppard (), before Saturday evening to get more details on where to meet and other information, such as inexpensive motel rooms.
Over the past couple of decades this count has had species totals in the range of 150-155, with a high of 163. Clearly this year the total will almost certainly be much lower with the sparser coverage.
