WESTERN MARYLAND - 11/22
Hi Everybody: I spent Monday birding in our three westernmost counties and had an overall uneventful day. I started in Garrett County and then worked my way east into Allegany and then Washington Counties. Below are abridged trips of my various stops.
Garrett County
Finzel Swamp
Swamp Sparrow 2
American Tree Sparrow 11 I did not know it at the time but this would be my best species of the day. (Several of them were singing)
Hermit Thrush 1
Piney Run (Frostburg Watershed)
Killdeer 21
American Tree Sparrow 3
(There was absolutely no waterfowl here)
Lake Meadows
Canada Goose 255
Mallard 24
Ruddy Duck 53
I spent the next 90 minutes on Russell Road unsuccessfully trying to refind the Northern Shrike seen over the weekend by Stasz and Co.) I had one Red-tailed Hawk and one Common Raven for my efforts.
My best bird on Michael Road was a Northern Mockingbird.
ALLEGANY COUNTY
Old Legislative Road was extremely quiet (midday).
On Old Dan's Rock Road I was surprised by an E. Screech Owl that called spontaneously after I started back down the road from the overlook.
At North Branch I saw one American Kestrel and an Eastern Phoebe.
Lake Habib at Rocky Gap State Park
Pied-billed Grebe 1
Killdeer 8
Mallard 11
Ruddy Duck 29
Bufflehead 2
Hooded Merganser 2
Common Raven 1
WASHINGTON COUNTY
Big Pool
Canada Goose 235
Mallard 36
Black Duck 15
Gadwall 7
Common Merganser 12
American Coot 3
Blair Valley Lake
Canada Goose 48
Hooded Merganser 2
That about sums up my day in western MD.
