This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, November 9, at
about 10 AM.

Top birds this week are Ross's Goose (blue morph) in DE, White-winged
Dove in VA, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS in DE, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL
in MD.

Other birds of interest include COMMON EIDERS and HARLEQUIN DUCKS,
RED-NECKED GREBE, NORTHERN GANNETS, AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, AMERICAN
BITTERNS, WHITE IBIS, raptors including OSPREY, NORTHERN GOSHAWKS,
BROAD-WINGED and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, GOLDEN EAGLES, SORA, SANDHILL
CRANES, MARBLED GODWITS, PARASITIC JAEGERS, MONK PARAKEETS,
Selasphorus HUMMINGBIRD, COMMON RAVENS, CAVE SWALLOWS, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, SEDGE WRENS, ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS, CLAY-COLORED, Vesper, NELSON'S and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS,
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTINGS, BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS, PURPLE FINCHES,
PINE SISKINS, and some very late migrants.

A blue morph ROSS'S GOOSE was discovered in a large flock of geese at
Cape Henlopen High School, DE, on Nov 6. Near the Shiloh Baptist
Church in Temperanceville, Accomack Co, VA, a White-winged Dove was
seen perched on a wire. Several YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS have shown up
again, this time on Cods Rd, near Prime Hook NWR, DE, on Nov 6 and 7.
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen in flight at Hart-Miller Island,
Baltimore Co, MD, on Nov 8.

COMMON EIDERS were seen at several places along the DE shore,
including seven from the Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch on Nov 3 and a
single bird at Fowler Beach, DE, on Nov 7. On Nov 3, the Cape Henlopen
Hawk Watch spotted two HARLEQUIN DUCKS, in addition to a RED-NECKED
GREBE. In addition to many NORTHERN GANNETS seen off Indian River
Inlet, DE on Nov 2, a single one was spotted over the Chesapeake Bay
near Deale, Somerset Co, MD, on Nov 3. Two high-flying American White
Pelicans were seen over Accomack Co, VA on Nov 7, and the one at
Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD, was seen again on Nov 7. Three
AMERICAN BITTERNS were found at Deale WMA, Somerset Co, MD, on Nov. 7.
A flock of at least 20 White Ibis was seen on Nov 7 in Accomack Co,
VA. Two Sandhill Cranes were in a field near Centreville, Queen Anne's
Co, MD, on Nov 4, and on Nov 8, three were seen along Broadkill Rd in
DE. A single American Golden-Plover was seen on Nov 7 in King George,
VA. Four Parasitic Jaegers were spotted from Indian River Inlet, DE,
on Nov 2. 

Raptor migration is slowing, but OSPREY were seen over Baltimore Co
(Nov 2, 6, and 7) and Anne Arundel Co (Nov 2), in MD, as well as from
the coastal hawk watches. NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were seen from the
Snicker's Gap Hawk Watch as well as from coastal watches at Cape
Henlopen and Kiptopeke, Northampton Co, VA. A very late BROAD-WINGED
HAWK was spotted from Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Nov 6. A ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK was seen over the NASA facility at Wallops Island, Accomack Co,
VA, on Nov 7, and another was spotted from the Cape Henlopen Hawk
Watch on Nov 8. GOLDEN EAGLES were seen over Talbot and Baltimore
Counties in MD on Nov 2 and 3, respectively, over Jefferson Co, WV, 3
birds on Nov 8, as well as over the hawk watches at Cape Henlopen, DE,
, Snicker's Gap (Clarke/Loudon Co, VA), Kiptopeke, VA, and Turkey
Point (Cecil Co, MD).

A SORA showed up at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary (Anne Arundel Co, MD)
on Nov 6, and a half-dozen MARBLED GODWITS were at Chincoteague NWR,
Accomack Co, VA, on the same day.

MONK PARAKEETS are again (or still) in Laurel, Prince George's Co, MD,
this time on Mt. Pleasant Drive, seen nest-building on Nov 3, 5, and
6.

On Nov 7, a short-eared owl was seen cruising at dusk in Leedstown,
Westmoreland Co, VA.

A Selasphorus hummingbird has been coming regularly to a feeder in

Two COMMON RAVENS were reported from Lorton, Fairfax Co, VA on Nov 3.

The BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES are now reaching all of northern MD, VA,
and DE, and extending southward to at least central MD. red-breasted
nuthatches are being seen throughout the reporting area. SEDGE WRENS
were reported from Accomack Co, VA, and Worcester Co, MD. Reports of
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER sightings come from Blue Mash Nature Trail,
Montgomery Co, MD (Nov 5), and Huntley Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co, VA (Nov
6).

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were reported from Lorton, Fairfax Co, VA, on
Nov 3, and from Prince William Co, VA, on Nov 6. Also on Nov 6,
sightings of VESPER SPARROWS came from Taylor's Island in Dorchester
Co, MD, and from Swan Creek Wetland, Anne Arundel Co, MD. A NELSON'S
SPARROW was seen at Truitt's Landing, Worcester Co, MD on Nov 5.
Lincoln's Sparrows were seen at Loch Raven Res., Baltimore Co, MD (Nov
2) and Wicomico Co, MD (Nov 7).

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Rumbley Pt., Somerset Co, MD, on Nov 6,
and SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from several locations including Anne
Arundel Co, MD (Nov 2), Chincoteague NWR (Nov 6), Fowler Beach, DE
(Nov 7), and Hart-Miller Island, MD (Nov 8).

Five BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were seen along VA Rte 734 in Loudon Co on
Nov 7.

PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS have now spread throughout the
reporting area.

Some very late migrants are still hanging around, including a CHIMNEY
SWIFT (Accomack Co, VA, Nov 7), an EASTERN KINGBIRD (NW DC, Nov 3), a
WHITE-EYED VIREO (Allen's Fresh, Charles Co, MD, Nov 6), a NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW (Woodbridge, Fairfax Co, VA, Nov 5), a SWAINSON'S
THRUSH (Ferndale, Anne Arundel Co, MD, Nov 6), and a TENNESSEE WARBLER
(Blue Mash Nature Trail, MD, Nov 2).

VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
