Hi Everyone,
I used the early morning (5 Nov 2010) rain as an excuse to take a break from my weekly Assateague counts and instead visited Truitts and George Island Landings in southern Worcester County. Nice birding at both locations.
Highlights from Truitts Landing (7:30-9:45am; water high, which kept shorebirds distant) included:
Blue-winged Teal 2
Greater Yellowlegs 43
Lesser Yellowlegs 1
Long-billed Dowitcher 38
Sedge Wren 1
Marsh Wren 3
Nelson's Sparrow 2
Saltmarsh Sparrow 1
At George Island Landing (10:15-11:20am; water over the road), a group of 82 Forster's Terns included 2 COMMON TERNS (a new November bird for me). Approximately 200 Tree Swallows were feeding over the marsh, but I couldn't find any Cave Swallows among them. A single Boat-tailed Grackle was also present.
Nothing like a little Worcester time to get you fired up for the Rarity Roundup--can't wait!
Have fun,
