Morning all,
As I did a quick walk around the yard this morning, a Grasshopper Sparrow flew up from our backyard "field", and flew through the backyard and into the cherry trees which border our back and separate our yard from the neighbors fields. I have left 2 places in the yard unmowed, growing natural for the last couple of years to see what birds and other wildlife I can attract. The back field is not terribly large, perhaps a third of and acre or less, with tall mostly dead grass, and other assorted weeds and small trees beginning to grow. In the middle of this field I have a bluebird box, which is now hosting its third breeding for the season. We have baby bluebirds all over the place now, too.
The front field is larger, and I mow a couple of paths through it with my push mower, so I have created a sort of mini-Blue Mash (without the ponds). This one I maintain for wildlife, planting wildflower seeds every few years. Also saw a male Indigo Bunting, fledged Brown Thrasher, chickadees, on my backyard rounds.
