> A RED-HEADED WOOKPECKER was active on a dead tree just to the left of the campground at the terminus of Camp Merry Land Rd.
A secondhand report to back up Matt's sighting....
A group of friends and I were kayaking the Potomac this weekend (the
last leg of a one-way downriver trip from Alexandria to Point Lookout,
which we did in segments).
As we rounded the point of St. George Island, my friend spotted not
one but a pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in roughly the same spot, to
the left of Camp Merryelande. I wasn't alert at the moment, but he
had a long clear closeup view as the two landed and flew away, and is
120% sure of his identification.
The sighting would have been on Sunday 6/20 in the late morning.
