It certainly was a gorgeous morning this Thursday to be birding
Little Bennett Regional Park in Montgomery County.
While not super birdy -- it's still only mid-April, after all --
there was always something interesting to look at and/or listen
to. A singing male PINE WARBLER greeted us at the Kingsley Trail
parking area, where we also had a flurry of Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers
and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. There were 2 singing NORTHERN PARULAS and
a pair of LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH along the KT, along with a singing
BROWN THRASHER.
Up the steep hill and along the Purdom Trail, we had a nice bunch of
birds that included single BLUE-HEADED and WHITE-EYED VIREOS in the
same tree (neither one vocalizing) and the palest RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH we have ever seen, presumably a female. Along the Piedmont
Trail on the west side of Route 121 we heard a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,
saw and heard several FIELD SPARROWS and Eastern Bluebirds, and
stumbled upon what sounded like a veritable covey of Eastern Towhees.
No Prairie Warblers, Chats, or Worm-eating Warblers -- yet.
