Joanne,
I only have binoculars, but using a scope adds to the experience. Oxbow Lake is over 70 acres, so there isn't just one spot that is best to see waterfowl. I'd be happy to show you or anyone around and provide firsthand information about access points, most of which involve walking/hiking as the Oxbow Lake Nature Preserve is over 250 acres. The trails are primitive, a bit hilly sometimes, and can be slippery when wet. If you search the MDOSPREY archives on Oxbow, you can find some directions that I've provided in the past. For anyone who walks up the improved trail to the observation area at the entrance on Oxbow Place - that isn't the spot to see very much at all.
This is an invitation to everyone who is thinking about birding at the Oxbow. If you want to give me a call prior to coming, I can answer questions or perhaps even join you for a little orientation (and birding).
