Hi all,
Early on Saturday morning as I was standing in the driveway getting ready
to leave (around 7AM) for a birdwalk I was leading for The Backyard
Naturalist, I heard an Eastern Meadowlark singing from the back edge of the
property. My farmer/neighbor has still not mowed his hayfield, so perhaps
nesting (?). Then around dusk, my daughter and I were out back and she saw a high
flying bird heading NE, a lone Common Nighthawk!
Early last evening I was sitting on the deck out back, when (around 6:15
PM) I watched an adult Red-headed Woodpecker fly over our house heading due
south.
We've also been watching multiple N. Mockingbirds feeding fledged young in
our yard, a very diligent pair of Brown Thrashers bringing food to a nest
somewhere in our yard (we still haven't determined exactly which holly they
are in), as well as E. Phoebe feeding a baby on our fence, Bluebirds still
feeding begging young around the yard, and the oriole pair , which should
be feeding young in the nest by now. Lots of high pitched begging calls from
the bushes all around the yard!
