I did a quick swing through Hains Pt., DC this (Thursday) morning, and
was surprised to find 2 alt. plumaged SNOWY EGRETS at the north end of
the golf course. I was encouraged when I first got to the golf course
and saw a GREAT EGRET circling low over the course. Even this species
is rarely seen on the golf course grounds. The Great Egret never
landed, but after I parked and started scanning the large flock of
gulls, the 2 Snowies flew across my field of view. My first thought was
"here are the Cattle Egrets from yesterday), but quickly saw that they
weren't Cattles at all, but nice, bright Snowies. They landed by the
very large pond that had formed after all the rains (even bigger than
yesterday), and actively fed for about 20 minutes. I first saw them at
7:00 and they took off at c.7:22.
I did a quick spin around the point, but couldn't stop for long at any
one spot. I left at 7:50, finding 48 species. Here are some other birds
of note:
Spotted Sandpiper 1
Solitary Sandpiper 2
Greater Yellowlegs 1
Lesser Yellowlegs 7
Least Sandpiper 5
Bonaparte's Gull 2 (1 1st cycle bird on the golf course with the
Ring-billeds, 1 adult bird over the river)
Ring-billed Gull 250 (still a high number)
Caspian Tern 1 (on the golf course with the Ring-billeds)
Least Flycatcher 1 (heard along Buckeye Dr., in the trees by the last
building on the west end of the road)
American Pipit 2 (sitting in the grass at the north end of the golf
course)
Yellow Warbler 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler 4
Ovenbird 1
Common Yellowthroat 3
Savannah Sparrow 1
I'm sure there were many other passerines around, I just didn't have
time to work the bushes.
Good birding,
