I thought there would be more birds moving upriver today, now that the NW
winds ceased, but there were fewer. 140 Bonapartes zipped by, but few stopped.
Five Common Loons passed high overhead. Only a few dozen cormorants. I had a
brief flash of hope when a diving cormorant off Rileys lock showed a white spot
on its flank. When it surfaced it had an obvious Double-crest face pattern.
Then it took off and I could see that it had a white plastic band on its left
leg. It showed as a small white rectangle in flight, not the bigger irregular
flank patch of a Great Cormorant. I often see silver bands on the cormorants, but
have not noticed colored bands before.
