Fellow Birders,

About 11 or so this morning I, a friend and two Maryland
birders named Jack and Helen whom we encountered on our walk on the C&O
Canal towpath saw the previously-reported Trumpeter Swans about a mile south
of Violette's Lock. Four adults accompanied five Tundra Swans, including
three juveniles.

The previously-reported White-winged Scoter and Surf Scoter
also remain at Riley's Lock and were seen by my friend and I from the bridge
over the canal and nearby picnic area. Other noteworthy birds seen at this
location were two male Red-breasted Mergansers, some Greater Scaup mixed in
with a raft of Lesser Scaup, at least 10 Pied-billed Grebes, a winter wren
and a Bald Eagle. Other waterfowl encountered during our walk along the
towpath were Common Merganser (10), Ring-necked Duck (20), Bufflehead (15),
American Black Duck (1), Mallard and Canada Goose.
