My post of yesterday was made hurriedly with frozen fingers using Mark's
iPhone. I thought I should try to be more precise for duck seekers who may be
looking in the next few days.
I apologize for not knowing the geography of Cambridge. Perhaps this has
already been posted. We always use blind reckoning, driving into Cambridge from
route 50 on Maryland Avenue, following signs to the historic district, and
eventually turning right toward the public and private boating facilities.
We parked to the east of the wooden piers, for which you have to sign in on
a clipboard on some gray boxes on a post. We walked out on the concrete pier
before (east of) the wooden piers. This concrete pier makes a 90 degree left
turn and parallels the shore. From the end of this pier we (Mark) found the
Tufted Duck with a mixed flock, mostly scaup, first noticed by its dark back
and confirmed by its scraggly pony tail. The flock was on the outside of the
corresponding part of another concrete pier. We had great views of the tufted
diving toward the side of the pier and feeding. This was around noon.
We were joined by other birders, including some Baltimore birding buddies
and Les Roslund, who had found the Eurasian Wigeon while first walking out on
the pier. As we walked back, we saw it in the company of two American Wigeons
along the shore in front of the Sailwinds Park. It flew onto the lawn and
spent the better part of an hour in the grass in front of the buildings with
"Sailwinds" written on it, at one point flying down to graze on the lawn in
front of the hospital.
We did not find the Barrow's Goldeneye yesterday, but Joe and others had
seen it on Monday. At that time, she was in a mixed flock in the water to the
left side of the land on which the yacht club is located. There were no birds
there yesterday; it was completely iced in. We were given permission to walk
on the yacht club lawn, but not on the piers; this was not productive.
Good luck everyone!
