While taking the dog on a quick, cold walk to the lake this
morning, I spotted a single blue morph SNOW GOOSE among
the thousands of Canadas. There continues to be a surprising
amount of open water at the lake - I estimate that about 1/3 is
ice free - but an equally surprising lack of diversity among the
waterfowl. Besides the Canada Geese and several dozen
Ring-billed Gulls, I saw 50+ MALLARDS, a few AMERICAN
BLACK DUCKS, 3 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and 1 RUDDY DUCK.
Even our usually reliable Hooded Mergansers were elsewhere.
At home, I am getting PINE SISKINS at my feeders on a regular
basis, usually 2 or 3 at a time. Although they sometimes come
to the finch feeder filled with a "finch mix," they much prefer the
sock feeder filled with Nyjer seed.
