Top birds this week are TUFTED DUCK* in MD, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD,
EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE* in DE, CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD* in VA, and
WESTERN TANAGER* in VA.
Other birds of interest include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, EURASIAN
WIGEON, KING EIDER, RED-THROATED LOON, EARED GREBE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK,
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, SNOWY OWL*, SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD, nuthatches, warblers, sparrows, LAPLAND LONGSPUR,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and PINE SISKIN.
A TUFTED DUCK* has been showing at the Cambridge Marina, in Dorchester
Co, MD, and seen as recently as Jan 11. Also present at the marina
were a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* and a EURASIAN WIGEON, both seen as
recently as Jan 12. Birders should use the public area of the marina
along the concrete pier not the wooden piers or other private
property.
A EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE* was spotted near Smyrna, Kent Co, DE, south
of the intersection of Eagles Nest Landing Road and McQuail Road on
Jan 9.
The CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD*, which has been visiting a feeder just north
of Lynchburg, Bedford Co, VA, continues to be seen, thanks to the kind
hospitality of the property owners at 207 Sandown Circle, with the
most recent report on Jan 11.
A WESTERN TANAGER* has been seen regularly in Williamsburg, VA, at a
private home at 154 Lakewood Drive -- off of Route 31 (Jamestown
Road). Birders are welcome but should respect the property and parking
areas.
A flock of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS have been seen at Blackwater NWR in
Dorchester Co, MD, on Jan 10 and 11.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was at pool 3B in Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD, on
Jan 9.
CACKLING GEESE were found at numerous locations. A CACKLING GOOSE was
seen in a flock of SNOW GEESE close to Salisbury, Wicomico Co, MD, on
Jan 9. Two CACKLING GEESE were on Whitehall Road, close to Annapolis,
Anne Arundel Co, MD on Jan 9. Two CACKLING GEESE showed at Blackwater
NWR on Jan 10.
A TRUMPETER SWAN (#960) and two TUNDRA SWANS were at Oxbow Lake, Anne
Arundel Co, MD on Jan 9.
Two KING EIDERS were at the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on Jan
9.
A REDHEAD was at Thomas Point SP, Anne Arundel Co, MD, on Jan 10.
REDHEADS have been seen at various locations including the Cambridge
Marina, Dorchester Co, MD, on Jan 7.
A RED-THROATED LOON was reported at Thomas Point SP, Anne Arundel Co,
MD, on Jan 10.
An EARED GREBE was found in the water at 33rd Street in Ocean City,
MD, on Jan 9.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flew over the Fairwood Development of Bowie,
Prince George's Co, MD, on Jan 10. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on
Route 335 close to the Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on Jan 10.
Seven LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at the Salisbury Landfill,
Wicomico Co, MD, on Jan 9.
Two SNOWY OWLS were seen in the ORV Zone on Assateague Island, MD as
recently as Jan 9.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was spotted on Cedar Creek Road, Dorchester Co, MD,
on Jan 10. A SHORT-EARED OWL was at Bombay Hook NWR, DE, on Jan 12.
The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Port Republic, Calvert Co, MD is still
present with the most recent sighting on Jan 12.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were at various locations including Columbia,
Howard Co, MD on Jan 10 and Spruce Creek Park, Nelson Co, VA, on Jan
10. A BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH was spotted at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester
Co, MD, on Jan 9.
Warblers that normally don't winter over in our area continued to show
in various locations. A PINE WARBLER was spotted in Eldersburg,
Carroll Co, MD, on Jan 7 and 11. Other PINE WARBLER sightings included
Patuxent River Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD, on Jan 7 and Hip Roof Road
in Dorchester Co, MD on Jan 10. LBJ Grove in Wash DC had reports of
PINE WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on
Jan 10. A YELLOW WARBLER was spotted at Dyke Marsh in Fairfax Co, VA,
on Jan 11. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at Silver Lake, Rehoboth DE,
on Jan 11. Five PALM WARBLERS showed at Patuxent River Park, Anne
Arundel Co, MD, on Jan 7.
Sparrows are showing in numerous locations. Spruce Creek Park in
Nelson Co, VA, yielded an array of sparrows on Jan 10 including
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, FOX SPARROW,
and CHIPPING SPARROW. A LARK SPARROW was reported on Vessey Orchard
Road, Somerset Co, MD, on Jan 9.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was feeding in the field at the intersection of
Route 9 and the entrance to Bombay Hook NWR, DE, on Jan 9.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE is being seen regularly in Williamsburg, James City
Co, VA, in the vicinity of 154 Lakewood Drive.
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was reported at Prettyboy Reservoir,
Baltimore Co, MD, on Jan 6.
PINE SISKINS continue to show at many locations across the region.
