I arrived in Cambridge just after 8:30 yesterday (January 11) and
joined a group of birders enjoying extended views of the female
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in the middle of the marina. (We were
on the easternmost wooden pier, in the municipal marina.) By 9:30
or so, the Tufted Duck had gone into hiding (at least I got a very
good, albeit brief view of him on Thursday) and the Eurasian
Wigeon seemed to have disappeared (now I'm 0 for 2 on him).
After leaving Cambridge I headed over to Wicomico County to
continue looking for ducks. My best stop was at Barren Pond,
on Rte. 54 east of Mardela Springs. There I found a group of about
20 RING-NECKED DUCKS (mostly males), a close-in female
COMMON GOLDENEYE (nice to compare with the Barrow's), and
a lone male WOOD DUCK. By the time I got to the Nanticoke
River the wind was blowing something fierce. At the boat ramp on
the south side of Wetipquin Creek I found a half dozen RUDDY DUCKS
popping up and down in the waves and at least one BUFFLEHEAD.
At Tyaskin Park there was a raft of about 100 CANVASBACKS and
a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT. On the return trip, along
Nutters Neck Road, I saw 6 MALLARDS and a BLACK DUCK in
Manumsco Creek. Earlier, at the boat ramp in Mardela Springs, the
tide was low and there weren't any ducks, but I managed to track
down a Downy Woodpecker - my county closeout #23.
