As a nod to Janet Millenson.we had our usual band of six American Crows that
came in about 9:30 on Thursday morning. BTW, I am still trying to turn my
goldfinches into Pine Siskins, but to no avail!
I went out to fill up the feeders with sunflower chips, and crumbled up some
stale (whole wheat) bread for the crows. When they returned, I discovered
why the bread disappears so quickly. The crows fill their beaks with as much
of the bread crusts as they can muster. Then they fly away with their
goodies. I had presumed that they went on to consume their meal (in peace)
away from interlopers, until I saw one of them "cache" the bread bits in the
English ivy that grows on the opposite side of our yard. The crow neatly
placed his/her stash in the ivy, and covered it over with dry leaves. Then
that same crow walked back to the feeder to continue eating fallen sunflower
chips.
Now, I wonder who will get to the bread cache first-the crow or a clever
squirrel?
