See Life Paulagics is running two pelagic trips out of Lewes, DE in
the month of August. The ocean temperatures this year are extremely
warm, which we hope will increase the likelihood and number of certain
species like Bridled Tern, Audubon's Shearwater, and hopefully
something rarer for our area. This is also the best time of year to
look for White-faced Storm-Petrel and Long-tailed Jaeger, and a good
time to search for Arctic Tern and South Polar Skua.

To get an idea of the extent of the warm water, take a look at this
satellite image from Rutgers University. If you look at the 600 ft.
line on the chart, the indentation just below 38º 30' is the tip of
the Wilmington Canyon and the indentation around 38º 15' is the tip of
the Baltimore Canyon, both well-known features for birds, cetaceans,
fish, and other marine life.

The 14-hour August 16th trip now has about 6 spaces left. The cost is
$175. We will be aboard the 85' Thelma Dale IV.

The 22-hour August 21-22 trip can take just a few more people. (This
trip is HIGHLY limited for comfort.) The cost is $375. We will be
aboard the 110' Thelma Dale V. We will be heading out into very deep
water that is not accessible by the 14-hour trip. We expect the
majority of our deep water time to be spent in Maryland waters in the
Baltimore Canyon.

Despite unusually cool water, 8 Leach's and a Band-rumped Storm-Petrel
were found last year. Other overnighters from Lewes at this time of
year have found White-faced Storm-Petrel (2 birds on one trip),
Leach's Storm-Petrel, Sabine's Gull, South Polar Skua (several trips),
Long-tailed Jaeger (several trips), Arctic Tern (several trips),
Bridled Tern (most trips), and Audubon's Shearwater (all trips) as
well as some of the more common species.

For those who are interested, there will also be an opportunity to
fish for tuna (usually Yellowfin though possibly Bigeye or Longfin
Albacore), dolphin (Mahi Mahi), shark (we caught a 100+ pound
hammerhead on one trip), and anything else that might appear.

Check out our web site for more information. Please contact us if you
are interested in either of these trips.

Hope to see you aboard.
