In mid-day I took a walk along the C & O Canal upstream from
Riley's Lock. From mile marker 23 to just beyond mile marker 24
I counted at least 5 singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS
(my FOY), 3 singing PARULA WARBLERS (also FOY), as well as
many BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, an EASTERN PHOEBE,
and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.
On the return trip I spotted the BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON
on the far side of the turning basin, in exactly the same location
reported by Lydia Schindler earlier today.
In bloom along the tow path: Spring Beauty, Dutchman's Britches,
Virginia Bluebells, and Toothwort.
Spring is here!
