Hi All,
I had to deliver Ian's saxophone to school in town today (he forgot it
this morning). On the way home around noon I decided to have a look at
Great oak Pond. Some days you are lucky. There were about 1000 Snow
Geese flying over the pond, being very flighty. This was largely
attributable to three immature Bald Eagles that passed over, and a
helicopter. Nonetheless I was able to go over the flock on the pond in
sufficient detail to count 19 blue geese, spot an adult ROSS'S GOOSE (my
first spring record here), and read a neck collar on a female Greater
Snow Goose (PU93, banded in April 2006 at Ile-aux-oies, PQ with
subsequent sightings in May 2006 and October 2007 in southern Quebec,
link for Universite Laval Snow Goose demographics studies:
http://www.cen.ulaval.ca/gon-gsg/index.html). Other waterfowl on the
pond were 40 Green-winged Teal, 51 Northern Shovelers, 11 American
Wigeon, 14 Lesser Scaup, and 8 Ruddy Ducks. Nice day out there.
Good birding,
Walter Ellison
