Hi Everyone,

Please join me in congratulating Jim Brighton on his very impressive
conservation effort in 2007, his Delmarva Photo Big Year. As many of you
know, Jim undertook this fascinating quest to help American Bird
Conservancy raise funds for the critically endangered Junin Grebe. His
goal was to photograph as many as possible of the Delmarva Peninsula's
birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, dragonflies, and
damselflies. Braving heat, cold, rain, snow, ticks, and mosquitoes--and
dragging his girlfriend and friends along with him--he documented an
impressive 397 species.

Jim's dedicated efforts led to many natural history highlights in
Maryland, especially in the area of entomology. Jim and Co. discovered two
new ode species for the state of Maryland, the Furtive Forktail and
Duckweed Firetail, as well as one of the first populations of Atlantic
Bluet. The butterfly highlight was finding and photographing the
endangered King's Hairstreak. Perhaps as impressive as the rarities was
Jim's dedication to photographing tough-on-Delmarva species such as
Eastern Chipmunk. I distinctly remember calling Jim so that he could CHASE
A GROUNDHOG that my girlfriend Becky and I had spotted near Salisbury! It
was really a monumental effort, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to
pass on some kudos.
