Thanks for posting this Hal/Lynn. I went looking for it at lunchtime yesterday
and had no luck. I looked carefully in the same area, as well as along the road
at Tanyard, Rd, Nottingham Rd, Candy Hill Rd, Fenno Rd, and St. Thomas
Church Rd. I also looked around the top of Merkle by the V.C.
I will try looking around some more, and post if anything changes!
A couple other notes. Monday morning when I dumped off my trash at the
P.G. County recycle pad on Brown Station Rd, I saw 5 Blue (snow) geese with
the flock of other waterfowl (mostly honkers) on the pond there. I think they
may be the same group that overwintered in the area the last two winters.
Yesterday, I saw an adult Red-shouldered Hawk eat an unusual breakfast
behind my house. It was ~30-32 degrees out, and I was surprised to see the
hawk perched in a tree and eating a bullfrog, which appeared to be very stiff!
I think this bird is our locals; during summer I have often seen it flying off with
a snake - it seems to really like the swamp's delectable offerings!
I will be off from work and probably birding a lot around Jug Bay and vicinity
the next couple weeks. I'm excited about the possibility of seeing any winter
gulls, raptors, "boreal finches" or other winter migrants :)
Season's Greetings!
