I drove down to Mayo Beach at lunch today, 9/17.
There's really no legitimate access to the beach since
entry to the park is by group reservation only and was
gated and there's a private property sign on the beach
just outside of the gate. So, I walked along the edge
of the Mayo Beach property to the beach and scanned
left. The Whimbrel was well to the left near the
houses. There is a yellow house with a stylized "S" on
the chimney and the bird was on the beach in front of
it.

I watched the bird for about 5 minutes before a Great
Black-backed Gull flew in and landed displacing the
Whimbrel which flew up and landed behind one of the
wood jetties. When it flew, there was no obvious white
rump patch as mentioned by Bud Taylor in previous
messages.

Why when you have the entire beach to land on would
you pick the one spot where some other bird is
sitting? Ornery GBBGs!
