Dan,
Several states have their own e-bird projects. There are, as far as I
know, two requirements: (1) there has to be a supporting organization to
administer the site and (2) there is some charge( I'm not sure of the
amount) from Cornell for their programming work. I think Virginia is adding
a site this fall.
It is nice to see all the Maryland checklists entered this August, but
since e-bird's inception in 2002 Maryland has not ranked very high in the
number of checklists submitted. For example, Hughes Hollow is a very
popular birding site in Montgomery County, but if you look at the summary
for the area, almost all the sightings are mine. Jim Nelson and Kevin Graff
submit listings when they are there, but very few other people do.
I encourage anyone who birds Hughes Hollow to enter their checklists in
e-bird. If you have an interesting sighting (as opposed to a check list),
that can be entered under "casual observations" in e-bird. E-bird lists
Hughes Hollow (McKee-Beshers WMA) as one of the "Hot Spots" in Maryland, and
so it is easy to find and simple to enter your data.
