Hello everyone,
This evening the three Black-crowned Night-Herons were back at their roost
on Town Creek in Oxford. They are not as regular as they were last year.
They are normally present every third or fourth evening. Oxford/Spring Rd.
impoundments are bursting with shorebirds. Although nothing rare as shown
up yet the numbers are staggering. This evening I quickly checked the
impoundments with all numbers approximated.
Pectorals -- 45
Stilt Sandpipers -- 5
Least Sandpipers -- 30
Semipalm Sands -- 50
Western Sands -- 5
Black-bellied Plovers -- 1
Semipalm Plovers -- 15
Short-billed Dow. -- 15
Killdeer -- 35
Lesser Yellowlegs -- 15
Greater Yellowlegs -- 10
These impoundments are relatively close to Rt. 50. Anyone heading to the
coast to bird should stop and check them out. Rare shorebirds that have
been seen here in the past have included --
Am. Golden Plover
Hudsonian Godwit
Wilson's Phalarope
Red Knot
Buff-breasted Sandpiper
Most waders are usually present although I am still waiting for my first
Tricolored Heron.
To reach the impoundments take a right on Almshouse Road if travelling south
on Rt. 50. After a few miles hang a right on Spring Road. The impoundments
will be on the right. Keep travelling down Spring Road until it dead ends
into Oxford Road. Hang a right on Oxford Road and another large impoundemnt
will be on the right. Stay on Oxford Road and hang a right on Llandaff Road
and another impoundment will be on the right. There is a lot of habitat and
it would be great to have more eyes.
