Hi Everyone,
My friend Jerod Hubbell and I went for a run around the perimeter of Fort Smallwood this evening, stopping just a couple times to check for shorebirds on the main pond. The following are some of the highlights:
Great Blue Heron--2
Great Egret--5
Little Blue Heron--1 adult
Cattle Egret--1
Osprey--1
Killdeer--2
Solitary Sandpiper--1
Least Sandpiper--7
PECTORAL SANDPIPER--1
Ring-billed Gull--1
Herring Gull--2
Great Black-backed Gull--3
RT Hummingbird--1
Eastern Wood-Pewee--1
Eastern Kingbird--2
The same run yesterday was similar, but I had an immature Little Blue Heron, 15 Leasts, 1 Solitary, and 1 Spotted. The pond is pretty low, creating some very promising habitat for shorebirds and waders.
Around the yard, I've had a BALTIMORE ORIOLE singing a shortened song each morning for the last two days, and we have two female RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDs viciously competing for the feeder. PURPLE MARTINs are thinning out, but there are still a few around each evening.
No new pictures from this weekend, but I added two pages of updates from my Texas trip the previous weekend (click "Previous" at the bottom of the first page).
