Hi Everyone,

Mike Parr and I spent the morning and dryer part of the afternoon at several locations between eastern Carroll and western Washington Counties. We started the day at McKeldin (PVSP) hoping to photograph and videotape CERULEAN WARBLERs for ABC publications, and ended with success at the last moment. Other highlights there were a singing Yellow-throated Warbler from the Howard side, and a very confiding American Beaver. We continued west to scout for a Maryland big day that I will be doing with Jim Brighton, Matt Hafner, and Marshall Iliff on June 9th. The target bird for western Washington was an easily accessible Blue-winged Warbler. Although we didn't find any near I-70, we did find plenty of nice field and second-growth birds. A loop of Willow and Round Top Roads produced abundant Prairie Warblers and Yellow-breasted Chats, as well as several Orchard Orioles, Yellow Warblers, vocal YB Cuckoos, and a Willow Flycatcher. Along the C&O Canal, we found expected species such as
Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-throated Vireo, and Acadian Flycatcher. Near the C&O Canal at the intersection of Deneen and Pearre were two singing Blue Grosbeaks and several Grasshopper Sparrows. We ended the birding day watching a male DICKCISSEL singing in the yard on the western edge of Antietam. Thanks to Elliott for finding this bird, and to others for posting about it (directions in the archives). Also around Antietam were 3 Wild Turkeys, a singing Vesper Sparrow, and many singing Grasshopper Sparrows.
