The Baltimore Bird Club trip
Soldierıs Delight Natural Environment Area

We started at 7:30 a.m. and walked west along the White Trail (from the
overlook on Deer Park Road) to the open field beyond the power line cut.
Along the way we found Eastern Towhee, White-eyed Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo,
Scarlet Tanager, and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. In addition, we tallied the
following warbler species: PRAIRIE, NASHVILLE, BLACK-AND-WHITE, PINE,
BLACK-THROATED BLUE, WESTERN PALM, HOODED WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and
OVENBIRD. The Hooded Warbler stayed hidden in the forest below the trail.
When we stopped in the clearing we found a first-year Bald Eagle under siege
by three highly agitated American Crows. We doubled back and found a male
Scarlet Tanager, two Worm-eating Warblers, a female Indigo Bunting, and a
Red-eyed Vireo in couple of small trees on the side of the trail, and ready
for close-up viewing.

At 9:30 we launched from the overlook again to walk the Red, and Orange
Trails. A Prairie Warbler sat above the trail in the first clearing - it
allowed us to approach and admire itıs wonderful singing. Field, and
Chipping Sparrows were found near the Choate Mine. The SUMMER TANAGER was
found singing on the Red Trail. Nearly everyone had a chance to see it
through the spotting scope. A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher nest was viewed in the
scope as well.

On the Orange trail we found two Western Palm Warblers, and heard another
Worm-eating Warbler and a Yellow-throated Vireo. As we moved into the
broadleaf forest on the Orange trail a Wild Turkey burst from the top of a
conifer and disappeared on the other side of the stream. We also picked up a
couple of Wood Thrush, American Robin, and a Eastern Wood-Peewee.
