I wasn't as fortunate at Rock Creek Park as Clive etc.
were this morning. But I did see two Wood and one
Swainson's Thrushes near the nature center, around the
pool.
While slowly heading northward in my car on Colesville
Road, I spied a Cooper's Hawk on my left, flying over
Northwest Branch. I also heard a Northern Parula
singing near the bridge. At the nearby Starbucks, a
Northern Rough-winged Swallow flew over. These are
surely the same birds I saw or heard on Tuesday from
the nearby spillway.
At Brighton Dam, I watched the Cliff Swallows and
Purple Martins fly around.
Along Sligo Creek Parkway, just upstream from the
tennis courts near Wayne Avenue, there are two
occupied Yellow-crowned Night Heron nests. Today and
Tuesday I saw birds on both nests, and on Tuesday I
saw a bird perched lower down in a tree, watching me
and all the other people nearby. Today a Tennessee
Warbler and a Black-and-White Warbler were near the
bike path bridge, singing away.
Last night we listened to a Swainson's Thrush serenade
us about an hour or more before sunset. Yesterday
morning, we heard a Northern Parula singing, for
townhouse yardbird #51. It took five years to see 51
species at this house, compared to about 5 weeks at
the old house (the one with a yard, trees, and all
that). Our neighborhood Baltimore Oriole has been
back for a few days and is cheerfully chanting at this
moment, complementing the sound of The Arcade Fire
coming from the CD player.
Cheers,
Rob Hilton
