On Sunday AM I visited the site at David W. Force where the apparently
injured great-horned owl was on Saturday, with Kevin Heffernan. It was at the same
place, but this time it flew, but only ca. 100 yards and only horizontally.
It landed on a 2 ft high stump and turned to watch us. We kept our distance
and left after a few minutes.
Saturday pm I had been contacted by Kathy Woods, a rehabber based in Phoenix
(MD) - she was considering coming down to look at the owl. I advised her that
catching it would be very difficult and not to bother. It may recover on its
own - I don't think there is anything we can do.
I would be interested to hear any opinions on the bird's chances and what may
have happened to it (it is nowhere near any roads, so traffic was probably
not a factor).
Kevin had seen an Am tree sparrow (I did not - drat!) and we both saw an
apparent rusty blackbird foraging along the river's edge.
