So immediately we altered our plans to visit the vast
commonwealth to the north to look for the continuing
adult male Scott's Oriole near Camp Hill/Mechanicsburg
in favor of a fast dash to Violette's. On the way
Dave called to say that all the gulls had disappeared
upriver in the mist. When we arrived at Riley's Lock,
there were no gulls. Eventually three adult
Bonaparte's Gulls drifted downstream on the river,
flew back upriver out of sight, then drifted down
again. Other birds seen from on and near the bridge
over the creek included Horned Grebes, Gadwalls,
American Wigeons, 2 Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads,
about 10 Canvasbacks, all three species of merganser
(I think) Ring-billed Gulls. Other birders included
Dave Czaplak, Paul O'Brien, Lydia Schindler, Linda
Friedland, and Andy Martin. Dave mentioned that at
Violette's Lock he had 7 Long-tailed Ducks and a bunch
of Redheads. At the parking lot just before we left,
we spotted two Brown Creepers near each other in the
same tree.
At around 4 pm , Lisa and I headed upriver to Sycamore
Landing Road. As soon as we reached the river, we
noted two ducks directly opposite us -- a pair of
Long-tailed Ducks! We saw one adult Bonaparte's Gull,
zero other gulls, dozens of scaup, some Buffleheads,
and about 2 dozen Whistling (Tundra) Swans. After
some 45 minutes we left for home.
