I believe the number one priority should be what is best for the birds and
then if the many suggestions and creature comforts put forth dove-tail in,
then go for what we can. It concerns me that if the island is "opened up,"
we'll have kids running all over the island, people will bring their dogs
over and turn them loose for a good run and if bikes are allowed, then it
won't be long until dirt bikes appear along with ATV's etc. I guess what
I'm saying is that I don't think we should make it "too comofrtable" or "too
accessible" so that it attracts groups that would not be conducive to the
environment of the island.
I believe I concur with Pete Webb in making it primarily for shore birds for
the reasons he and others stated. That doesn't mean other habitats can't be
expanded or introduced with native grassses, shrubs, trees etc to coexist
with the shore bird habitat. Personally, I would be more than willing (and
I'm sure there are many others) who would volunteer to do what ever is
needed; plant grass, shrubs, trees, help constuct benches, make signs,
paint, etc.
I think a golf cart is great idea for the handicapped and the weary, but I
understand that maintenance is a big problem.
By the way, Gene, I thought I heard Marcia say that you were considering
opening a Starbucks or Rita's Italian Ice concession on the island. Is that
true? :-)
